Children’s Library

DISCLAIMER: Many of the features listed below are in development and will be available soon, watch for announcements on this website and the Facebook page, or inquire at the library about status.

We are currently looking for volunteers to fill roles for several of these programs, inquire at the library

Traveling Storytime: A volunteer from the Children’s Library will come to your daycare, classroom or office/shop space to read a story to children

Library Checkout Brought to You: A library volunteer will come to your classroom to provide children (with parental permission) a library card and the opportunity to check out books from porter memorial library. Also, a volunteer can provide books on rotation for a classroom library.

Storytime at the library: Tuesdays at 11:00 AM a volunteer or guest will read a story and provide a craft for children in the Children’s Library

Reading Resource Area: For young learners who may be dyslexic, or otherwise delayed in their literacy efforts. Young learners now have a designated private space in the children’s library area where they can read aloud and practice writing skills.

Children’s Library Garden: upcoming: from planting seeds to harvesting, the Children’s Library will have a busy garden plot where children can help care for the “deer proof” garden in the back yard at the library.

Book Reviews from the Children’s Library: Children are encouraged to share their reactions to library books from PML. Book reviews will be posted in the Children’s Library and Machias Valley News Observer once a month.

Game Night: Once a quarter the Children’s Library will have a game night for children three years old and up. Watch the website for more details.

Puppet making: Puppet making will be held periodically on Saturday morning, more details will be posted on the website

Book Club: Age-appropriate Book Clubs will meet in the Children’s Library on a scheduled basis (evenings and weekends available) to discuss readers’ reactions to assigned books.

Downeast Coastal Conservancy Partnership: The Children’s Library keeps a list of the books used for DCC’s “Story Trail”, whenever possible, DCC provides “backpacks” for check-out at the library. The backpacks contain equipment to help guide your next park tour, bird watching adventure or wildlife identification trip. The library will also check-out snowshoes during the winter.
